PREVIEW: 9 reasons why we can’t wait for June 2019

  1. Gwendoline Christie in Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bridge

Last year’s immersive Shakespeare experience at the Bridge was a real high point of the programming thus far at the newish venue and so we’re super excited for this not least because the cast includes Game Of Thrones star Christie alongside Oliver Chris and David Moorst. Runs 3/6 through 31/8/19. Tickets

  • Read on for reasons including Andrew Scott, Tales Of the City and Sheridan Smith

2. Fleabag‘s Andrew Scott in Present Laughter at the Old Vic

A year ago we wondered why Phoebe Waller-Bridge had joined us in the Old Vic rehearsal room for a Q&A with Scott about Sea Wall. The 2nd series of Fleabag in which they both star was aired this year and we’re struggling to think of a better series so far in 2019. Scott plays bisexual and reunites with Pride director Matthew Warchus (also Artistic Director at the Old Vic) to star in this Noel Coward classic about fame in a cast including Sophie Thompson, Indira Varma and Luke Thallon. Runs 17/6 through 10/8/19. Tickets

3. Tales Of The City returns on Netflix

Star Laura Linney has performed at the Bridge Theatre twice in the last 2 years but we never dreamed that the TV show in which we 1st fell in love with her (as newcomer to 70s San Francisco Mary Ann Singleton in Armistead Maupin’s beloved books) would return. Available to binge watch in a 10-episode series on Netflix from 7/6/19. Original cast members including Olympia Dukakis also return.

4. Alphabeat’s 1st UK gig since 2012

Screen Shot 2019-05-31 at 19.08.03

Great Danes Alphabeat were 1 of our favourite bands who brought their pop fizz to three fantastic albums and bowed out of the charts all too prematurely. Lead singer Stine Bramsen went on to solo success and 2 of the band formed THANKS who made 1 of the best albums of last year. New single Shadows (see video above) is a return to former glories and they play the Borderline in London 28/6/19. Tickets

5. Sheridan Smith stars in Joseph alongside Jason Donovan

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat actually dates back to 1968 and Jason Donovan, who plays the Pharaoh here, starred in a 1991 revival at the Palladium. We’re here for Sheridan Smith, who plays the Narrator, during the 27/6 to 8/9/19 run. Tickets

6. Vulvarine saves the King’s Head, Islington

We gave Fat Rascal’s superhero musical Vulvarine 5* when we saw it at the VAULT Festival in March describing it as an ‘absolute must-see’ and saying Fat Rascal was ‘doing for musical theatre what Phoebe Waller-Bridge is doing for comedy’. It arrives at the intimate King’s Head, Islington 11/6 through 6/7/19. Tickets

7. Marina Sirtis stars in Dark Sublime at Trafalgar Studios 2

Star Trek: The Next Generation star Sirtis makes her West End debut as Marianne, a now-forgotten TV sci-fi icon in this play that explores the complexities of relationships especially in the LGBTQ community at Trafalgar Studios 2 25/6 to 3/8/19. Tickets

8. Julian Clary minces into the Palladium

Clary brings the curtain down on his 51-date Born To Mince tour at the Palladium this month, the scene of arguably his greatest triumph the award-winning annual pantomime. He stars again in Goldilocks and the Three Bears alongside Paul O’Grady. Tickets onsale from 31/5/19.

9. Divine Comedy releases Office Politics LP

Screen Shot 2019-06-01 at 12.08.05

Neil Hannon’s band formed in 1989 and release their 12th studio album Office Politics 7/6. Early release Queuejumper (listen above) sounds a little early 80s Cure. Touring the UK and Ireland in October. Tickets
