WORTH A LOOK?: ****

TRACKLIST: Every Christmas Day; Christmas Without You; Let It Go; Starry Skies; Can I Keep The Pictures?; Fairytale Of New York
Aalto won our Best Album monsta last year for her Wild, Wild Wonderland LP and, although its follow up is only half a dozen tracks long, it signposts an interesting future for her singing original songs.
- Read on for reasons including why live is where Aalto always excels
Lead track Every Christmas Day (listen below) was written by Kylie Minogue and it’s a surprise that the Aussie superstar didn’t make more of it because it’s a pop gem which Aalto shows off to perfection.
There are two covers here and viewers of ITV’s groundbreaking Dancing On Ice show will be familiar with Aalto’s full-throated take on Frozen‘s Let It Go which is, quite literally, on skates (watch below).
Aalto finished 3rd in that show this year and for us she hasn’t quite topped her 2018 Eurovision appearance in which she did less well with the superior Monsters.
We had a Q&A with her afterwards when she could only hint at the career highs that were to follow. Her version of The Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York proves what an underrated seasonal classic that song is even when Aalto’s duet partner isn’t quite what was expected.
Of the three remaining original tracks, single Starry Skies reminded most of Cyndi Lauper’s True Colours when it was released earlier this year.
Christmas Without You and Can I Keep The Pictures? prove that Aalto can do both downbeat and melancholy and round out a varied and interesting winter-themed mini-album.
We’re huge fans of Aalto’s and can’t wait to see what she does next because she’s always massively entertaining live not least when we’ve seen her in London at Under The Bridge and Greenwich Music Time.
