It’s over 30 degrees in Barcelona’s Parc del Fòrum by the sea as Sigrid takes to the stage as 1 of the opening acts of this 4-day festival which means ‘crossroads’ in Catalan.

England play Norway in Saturday’s World Cup quarter final and Norwegian Sigrid wisely steers clear of the topic with Spain also set to play Belgium on Friday evening.

She does attempt however midway through the set to find someone from Norway in the crowd and, happily, they were born in Sigrid’s hometown of Ålesund, as the pop star herself was almost 30 years ago.

The most entertaining moment during this sun-filled set is when Sigrid takes to the piano to sing ballads Home To You into Dynamite and the audience realises both what a talented songwriter she is but also how determined she can be.

We last saw her at Camden Roundhouse in March and she seems more at ease here, occasionally chatting to the audience in Spanish and even laughing at herself for forgetting the odd line to the songs she’s written herself.

At the end of her set she jokes that she’s so hot, she needs to put her head in a bucket of water and asks in Spanish for a beer.

She also thanks the people of Barcelona because it’s a city she’s enjoyed playing in a lot and even shot videos here.

We wrote after that Camden gig this year: ‘We leave thinking what a songwriting and performing giant Sigrid remains and can’t wait for the emotional maturity her 4th decade will infuse her material with’ and it’s very much how we feel about her after this joyous start to our Cruilla.

Tonight we return for an evening with Garbage, Suede and Pixies. Join us at this site over the World Cup weekend as we continue to write about the bands we see.

Cruilla is a short metro ride or 9K walk for us across town from Raval, south to the seafront and east along it to this park.

We haven’t been since 2013 but last saw acts here including the aforementioned Suede, Billy Bragg and Rufus Wainwright.

The heatwave is set to continue so we’ve our sunblock at the ready and we can’t wait for the perfect soundtrack to both England and Spain progressing to next week’s World Cup semis.
