WORTH A LOOK?: *****
Goodrem had 5 UK top 10 singles, a number 2 album with Innocent Eyes in 2003 and at the time of writing – 22 song reveals – her Eclipse is our favourite Eurovision entry.
- Read on for reasons including how Eclipse is the sound of Australia going 1 better than Dani Im a decade ago
It starts with fingers plucking at a harp and some naturalistic imagery creating a Florence and The Machine vibe before exploding into an insanely catchy chorus of ‘1 touch, 1 kiss, all my life for a night like this …’
You don’t come close to evoking Kylie Minogue’s astonishing On A Night Like This, particularly if you’re Australian, without some confidence in your own material and Goodrem’s Eclipse really delivers.
There’s also an idiosynchratic piano-led middle 8 which reminds of the music this worldwide artist is most known for and we can’t help but think this is the main challenger to current favourite semi 1’s fiery fiddle-fest for Finland Liekinheitin (Flamethrower) by Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen.
We think the Northern Lights songs in various Scandi selections have all failed to qualify and so the way is clear for this different but still beloved natural phenomenon people have real affection for to be celebrated while comparing it with the joining of 2 great lovers.
We’ve never seen Goodrem live before but we’ve every confidence she can perform this well and with some dramatic lighting conjuring an eclipse this should be a real moment in the grand final.
Juries of course return for the semis this year but we don’t think Goodrem will need them in semi 2.
Australia’s 11th Eurovision entry is the sound of it eclipsing and going 1 better than Dani Im a decade ago.
