WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2
RELEASED: Friday 11 June 2021
This is 24-year-old New Zealander Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor’s 1st new song in 4 years and we’re quite enjoying the similarities to Primal Scream’s 1990 classic Loaded.
- Read on for reasons including everything we know about the August release of Lorde’s next album and her upcoming UK tour
Co-written with Jack Antonoff, Lorde was initially worried it sounded too much like Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ but we’re delighted that the Scream’s lead singer Bobby Gillespie has given Solar Power his blessing because the world needs more of the blissed-out vibes of both songs.
The highly quotable lyrics include: ‘I’m kinda like a prettier Jesus’ and ‘But when the heat comes, something takes a hold, Can I kick it? Yeah, I can.’
The video (see below) fits the midsummer feel of the song and it sets up nicely the 20 August release of the album that shares the lead-off single’s name and includes within its 12 tracks titles including Stoned At The Nail Salon, Mood Ring and Oceanic Feeling.
Lorde’s 2nd album Melodrama won our Best LP of 2017 monsta and her Glastonbury appearance that year was the highlight of the festival for us.
Lorde plays a UK tour in 2022 including gigs at Camden Roundhouse and Alexandra Palace where we will join her and we can’t wait to do so.
