SONG OF THE WEEK: Heartbreak In This City by Steps & Michelle Visage (week beginning 3 April 2021)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

OUT: 25 February 2021

Visage is a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and played the role of teacher Miss Hedge in West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie before new bandmate Faye Tozer and so perhaps it should come as little surprise that she fits so flawlessly into Lisa Scott-Lee’s shoes.

  • Read on for reasons including which Melodifestivalen song we think the band should cover next

Scott-Lee lives in Dubai and so was unable to join the band for their spy-themed video (see immediately below) and appearance on BBC1’s Graham Norton Show (further below) ahead of the release of the 4th single from new Steps’ album What The Future Holds, an album of the month for us in December.

Two of its predecessors from that album, the title track and Melodifestivalen cover Something In Your Eyes, made our best song of 2020 shortlist and Heartbreak In This City is the best choice as a bridge between that album and new one, What The Future Holds pt 2, out 10/9/21.

That next album features 10 new tracks including Living In A Lie by Thomas G:son, co-author of the aforementioned Eyes. G:son had 2 songs in 2021’s MF finalen and we reckon Charlotte Perrelli’s magnificent Still Young must be a hot favourite for a Steps cover at some point soon.

Band member Lee Latchford-Evans told CelebMix Living In A Lie ‘brings classic Steps pop drama and key changes’.

City was co-written by Karl Twigg who was 1 of the authors of Steps’ classic One For Sorrow and draws on classic ABBA for its hook.

Visage used to be a member of girl band Seduction who had 4 top 30 US hits in 1989 and 1990 with Heartbeat (not the Steps song) making it to number 75 in the UK.

Visage is a safe pair of hands and is a competent stand-in for Scott-Lee, most noticeable for her striking visual similarity with Madonna.

Fans of the band will know how reliable they are for putting on an elaborate and entertaining arena show and tickets are now on sale for an 18-date UK tour this winter including 2 gigs at The 02 with monstagigz favourite Sophie Ellis Bextor. Tickets
