Today is Le Gateau Chocolat’s birthday which is fitting perhaps because his drag queen show with Jonny Woo is the most fun celebration of musicals running in London at the moment.

  • Read on for reasons including how the costumes are as outlandish as the pair’s patter

We last saw Le Gateau Chocolat in The Threepenny Opera at the National and Woo on the River Stage outside it but together they are a formidable comedy and singing duo.

The first thing we notice is that the pair’s voices complement each other with Chocolat’s deep growl coming into its own on show opener Phantom Of The Opera.

Woo is more agile than his partner and thrills the audience by wandering into it and selecting a volunteer to help him perform a song from Cabaret.

The costumes are as outlandish as the pair’s patter and peak with an illuminated outfit that Chocolat rocks during the big hit from Frozen.

During I Know Him So Well the pair joke about being related and it’s the best drag queen performance of the song we think we’ve ever seen.

The duo seek requests from the audience for songs from musicals for them to sing and we find ourselves joining in to Hopelessly Devoted To You from Grease.

By the show closer Summer Nights the entire audience is on its feet and we’d quite happily watch the entire show again.
