AWARDS: MONSTAS: Our best theatre actor shortlist of 2017 so far

We awarded 12 monstas for the best pop, theatre, TV and film of 2016 in December – and here we look at the cream of 2017 so far and what’s to come. James McAvoy and George Mackay are previous winners in this category.

We gave Angels In America (parts 1 and 2) 5 and 4* respectively but there was no doubt for us who was this fine show’s revelation. Oscar-nominated this year for Hacksaw Ridge, don’t miss your chance to see his transformation in this gay classic at the National’s Lyttelton Theatre. Runs to 19/8. Tickets available occasionally here.

Tom Hollander was nominated deservedly for an Olivier for his lead role in this Tom Stoppard masterpiece which transferred from the Menier into the West End.

Rosencrantz? Guildenstern? Daniel Radcliffe? Joshua McGuire? Or was David Haig unexpectedly better? Hard to separate the three in another Stoppard classic which extended its run at the Old Vic this year.

We loved this touring version of the musical classic – and its leading man/drag queen – so much that we return to see John Partridge in it at the New Victoria Theatre Woking this month. It tours until the end of August. Tickets

Picture top above courtesy Almeida via Facebook. Andrew Scott is going to be tough to beat in this 5* production from the Almeida which transfers to the Harold Pinter Theatre this month. We’re worried the intimacy of his Almeida performance might lose something in the transfer to a bigger theatre and return again for a second/third visit later this year. Opens 9/6 and runs to 2/9. Tickets

What to look forward to? We’ve our diaries cleared for Simon Russell Beale in The Tempest at the Barbican (tickets), Jack O’Connell in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof at the Apollo Theatre (tickets) and Ben Whishaw in Against at the Almeida (tickets).
