AWARDS SHORTLIST: Single of the year

It’s almost Christmas and what would the festive season be without some recognition of the best of 2015? Over the next fortnight we’ll shortlist five nominees in each of 11 categories for our Oscars, or monstas if you will, of 2015. Read on for the nominees for the monsta for single of the year.

  1. Goodbye To Yesterday by Elina Born and Stig Rästa

The best songs never win Eurovision and Estonia’s entry finished 7th this year. Major Rialto Monday Morning 5.19 chills for us, ‘Why would you think like that? Yeah, we fight a lot but in the end you and I we’re a perfect match’ – murder duet?

2. Sax by Fleur East

Ben Whonow? This year’s X Factor concluded 13/12 with both remaining acts perhaps quietly hoping not to win. Last year’s real winner was Uptown Funk (Fleur’s cover charting first) and Ms East’s debut single (and indeed album) takes that theme and makes an absolute strut of it, with a dash of Girls Aloud’s No Good Advice for good measure.

3. Delilah by Florence and the Machine

We’ve shortlisted Flo and her machine for best gig and album of 2015 so far. Delilah‘s probably our favourite of the four singles so far from How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. ‘The bells are ringing out’ – and Tom Jones should consider his Delilah thunder well and truly stolen.

4. Love Me Like You by Little Mix

Get Weird made our album of 2015 shortlist and monster chart topper Black Magic would be just too obvious to repeat the feat here. We think the fantastic Christmas and 7th Heaven mixes just shade it for the follow-up.

5. King by Years and Years

For us they’re a bit hit and miss live, chart-topping album Communion should’ve been better but there’s no doubting what an absolute bop King is. We first saw Y&Y lead singer Olly in 2013 as Peter Pan opposite Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench in Peter and Alice in the West End. Who could’ve predicted what would happen next for him?

  • The winners of 2015’s monstagigz awards, or monstas, will be announced 3/1/16.
