This is the 22nd and final European gig of Rosalía’s LUX tour and she tells us she is exhausted and it’s only the high energy of this London crowd that is seeing her through it.
- Read on for reasons including why we can’t wait to see Rosalía again on a stage in the UK or Europe and soon
There are 35 shows to come in the US and South America this summer but a break until 4 June when it resumes and we wouldn’t be surprised if it returns to these shores once more because it’s 1 of the best we’ve ever seen.
LUX is a hugely ambitious album which deploys an orchestra as Rosalía examines faith, God and sainthood while singing variously in Catalan, Spanish, Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Sicilian, and Ukrainian.
In a move often used in Eurovision and opera, English surtitles are displayed above the stage allowing the audience to join the dots emotionally and better understand songs they may have been equally loving and puzzling over since LUX’s November release.
The show opens with Rosalía transported onstage in a white box that breaks down to reveal the singer in a pink tutu. During second song, the strings-filled Reliquia she’s already on tiptoes like a ballerina showing exactly why her body might be telling her she needs a break from performing.
We have restricted view seats looking over the front of the stage which means we can’t see all the surtitles but do sometimes have a brilliant vantage point and this is an arena show with the intimacy of the theatre that deserves to be in stadiums.
Throughout, she’s accompanied by the 22-piece Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Yudania Gómez Heredia from a crucifix-shaped stage in the middle of the arena floor.
Her voice is a thing of beauty capable of reaching high to the nosebleed seats in this 20,000-capacity venue’s fourth tier and reminds us of Rachel Zegler’s in its clarity and tone.
There’s even a nod to the choreography of Jamie Lloyd’s EVITA with the staging of classical banger Berghain which sees dancers felled as they’re eyed by Rosalía.
The songs may be intensely personal but there’s also a playfulness about the performance with audience members invited onstage behind a rope to acknowledge our heroine during a cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.
Cara Delavingne even appears in a confessional box to unburden herself to our star.
There’s also an appreciation of art here so rarely seen in pop ranging from the dancers forming tableaus to an audience cam inviting members of the crowd to mimic a famous portrait pose.
Ultimately though it’s the artist’s songs that we’re here to enjoy and we leave with a deeper affection for Sauvignon Blanc (video above) after Rosalía and her pianist down a glass each before slaying a quite beautiful ballad.
She’s arguably the biggest and most interesting pop star in the world right now and we can’t wait to see Rosalía again on a stage in the UK or Europe and soon.
