GIG REVIEW: Youth Sector at Edge Of The Wedge, Portsmouth

By Carron Stacey, A Humdrum Mum

WHEN? Friday 20 February through 3 May 2026

What better to blow away the wet cobwebs of this dingy start to the year than to experience Youth Sector?

Well there isn’t. This is my first time seeing them, as I gossiped with a long lost friend throughout their set at Victorious Festival last year, and missed their supporting act for Dutch Criminal Record at the Wedgewood Rooms here in Pompey in October of last year.

Third time for Mr H though.

As soon as the group strutted on to ABBA’s Gimme Gimme Gimme, yellow and orange shirts matching their 2025 debut album Pop Couture, it was as if early Roxy Music had come on stage instead.

That must be the saxophone; used all through songs, not just as a solo. The audience is a loving one, with superfans shouting every word and people who don’t know them able to sing along and feel like they know where this is going.

It’s funky dance music chanelling DIVO and Talking Heads, served up by Nic Cage on killer bass and Kevin Rowland on vocals.

New music is well received by the audience and starts to mix in the frenetic energy of Bloc Party with a Strokes-vocal side. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Youth Sector, sadly without Bradley Moore on guitar as that was his last gig. Loud, energetic and dancey.

The perfect gig.
