Kylie has been releasing music for almost as long as we’ve been listening to pop and tonight we marvel at the consistency of her hits over 5 decades as well as the showgirl pizzazz with which she performs them.
- Read on for reasons including how Kylie radiates warmth and is as captivating as she ever was
A pop music career is notoriously hard to maintain and despite the dips there have been numerous resurrections in fortunes since 1988 and tonight’s 120-minute set leaving barely a pause for breath despite multiple costume changes is a giddy rush we can’t imagine many other performers completing with quite such style.
Our favourite moment is when Kylie embraces the 80s throwback that was her debut Australian single, a cover of The Locomotion, and she and her 8 backing dancers proceed to gyrate through the arena floor audience to a satellite stage not far from where we are stood.
Here Kylie talks to those fans around the tiny circular stage, asking for requests while performing snippets of those songs selected and eventually plucking out from the audience a female fan for a hug who can’t quite believe the interaction she is enjoying.
She plays an acoustic version of her 1988 UK debut single number 1 I Should Be So Lucky and then a medley of tracks from lockdown album Disco that were previously denied their moments to shine on a tour like this because of Covid.

We 1st saw Kylie live on the Enjoy Yourself tour at London’s now-no-more London Arena in 1990 and have seen her since at the old Wembley Arena, Eventim Apollo Hammersmith, new Wembley Arena and many times at The 02 – but not since 2014.
We don’t think we’ve ever seen her quite so overcome with emotion at the enthusiasm for which she is greeted by this boisterous crowd but also can’t recall her ever talking quite so candidly about how she sees her fans and this is reinforced by this brilliant satellite stage section.
When you’ve loved a performer for quite so long as we have cherished Kylie there will always be songs that evoke vivid memories and so it is here with What Do I Have To Do? (our 21st birthday party), Confide In Me (coming out) and Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (meeting the 1).

The setlist is long because particularly early on in the set the singles are played as medleys, yet still the music surprises and we especially loved the thrill of classy Slow speeding up at its finish.
It wouldn’t work anywhere near so well if Kylie didn’t convince that she was doing her utmost to pull out all the stops to please her audience but her warmth radiates throughout this arena and she remains as captivating as she ever was.

Near this spectacular show’s close she asks: ‘I’ve had an amazing night, have you?’ And the audience’s howl of approval leaves no-one in any doubt.
On a night like this it was hard to imagine anyone being able to do more to entertain.
