SONG OF THE WEEK: I Wanna Be Loved (Just A Little Better) by Alison Goldfrapp (week beginning Monday 19 August)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

Goldfrapp is rumoured to be a writer/producer on the new Lady Gaga album and launches her own record label this summer with this Richard X collaboration.

  • Read on for reasons including how this reminds of Giorgio Moroder-produced Donna Summer

She describes it to DIY as ‘fun, fizzy, a little bit melancholic and a little bit retro’ and we think of it as Giorgio Moroder-produced Donna Summer not a million miles from her debut solo LP The Love Invention which won the 2023 monsta for Best Album of the year.

It’s also the 1st release on Alison’s just-launched own label, A.G Records, of which she said: ‘It’s an exciting new chapter for me after two decades in the industry. To own my masters for the first time and share my music with the world in my own way feels really quite exhilarating.’

We saw her live last year at HERE at Outernet in London and wrote: ‘There’s a lack of engaging banter from the stage but this isn’t unusual and Alison seems genuinelly pleased to see us and so she should be because collaborating with dancefloor DJs on The Love Invention seems to have reinvigorated her and if you loved Goldfrapp for the big hits and bangers this is the album for you.

‘Both So Hard, So Hot and the album’s title track are real pop highs and Alison has never sounded so at home on the dancefloor even in her band’s prime.’

We last saw her live in summer 2023 at Somerset House in London for a memorable outdoor gig and said: ‘Fuelled doubtless by the debate around Madonna and Kylie’s Padam Padam, she also lets fly with the completely justified and relevent: ‘Never let age define you, it’s just bullshit!’

‘Her crowd is predominantly female, looks like it has been familiar with her work for the more than 2 decades she has been performing, is positively gay friendly and it is a sentiment which absolutely resonates.’

I Wanna Be Loved is a sentiment we can all subscribe to and it’s a worthy single to launch A.G. Records.
