WORTH A LOOK?: ****
10 years ago Spraggan sang her self-penned song Last Night (Beer Fear) during her successful audition for TV talent show The X Factor and it is referenced during this single perhaps to indicate how far she’s come in that time.
- Read on for reasons including how to see Spraggan on her UK tour next May
Last Night‘s lyrics include the lines: ‘Wish I could stop and I’m not joking Drinking too much and socially smoking Wish I could stop, start to behave …’
It took a while but she did stop and is now sober and Everything Changes sees her with Beatles-esque Strawberry Fields Forever orchestration and seemingly in reflective mode.
She sings: ‘I think of things that happened 10 years ago And I feel so much better letting ’em go … I miss the friends that I lost on the way’ and ‘I wish that someone had told me You’re not supposed to know yourself until you’re old.’
Spraggan has released 7 albums and in 2020 won our Best Gig monsta. We said of that online gig at The Mill, Digbeth : ‘During the Q&A we learn Spraggan would love to be in Fleetwood Mac and in Lightning she’s having so much fun that she even appears to forget that there isn’t an audience shouting: ‘even louder, come on, sing along’ at one point.’
We interviewed her as last album Choices was about to chart at her highest ever position (5) and she said of fellow 2012 X Factor cast member Ella Henderson who was charting with Tom Grennan duet Let’s Go Home Together which couldn’t be further in tone from Lucy’s own Sober: ‘It’s a great song. Not everyone in the world has a problem with alcohol like I do.’
Asked whether she would like to appear on TV again, she says: ‘Maybe a true reality television show. I’d love to go to the jungle.’
She’s recently announced a 9-date UK tour which includes a gig at 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and we’re expecting to hear tracks from her next album there.
