The fireworks of attention were no more than Alexander deserved after releasing half a dozen singles in 2021 many of which are featured on his band’s 3rd album Night Call released on Friday which outdances its competition to bag our coveted Album Of The Month title this January.

We say band but Years and Years is now very much a solo vehicle for Alexander after the departure of his erstwhile bandmates Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen.

Debut single Starstruck was a song of the week for us last year when we said: ‘Its dancefloor allure remains strong at a time when the lure of a crowded dancefloor that’s been out of bounds for so long shines like a beacon.’

Alexander described it as ‘about the rush you get when you’re with somebody you’re really into, it’s about holding onto a good feeling and not letting it go. Like most of us I’ve spent the past year at home, and I wanted to create something super positive and fun for people (and myself) to bop along to.’

Crave was a song of the week for us in November and it is lyrically darker than usual with Olly confessing: ‘The only thing I crave is the pain from you, I’ll do anything to stay if you want me to.’

Elsewhere, Sweet Talker boasts a fizzing string hook like something out of Madonna’s Papa Don’t Preach accelerating Thelma and Louise-style off a cliff into oblivion.

We think we can hear the influence of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in the bass of some of the other stronger songs including the title track and Consequences.

There’s also a lyrical lust for life, unapologetic sexuality and abandon in tracks like 20 Minutes and Muscle.

Alexander said: ‘Night Call has been my escape for the past couple of years, I put all my frustration, loneliness, hope, horniness, grief and optimism into making a really fun record I could dance to, I’m so excited to put this out and share it with you all.’

We last saw Years and Years live in Camden in 2018 with MNEK and we loved how Alexander married a great live vocal with some killer moves.

Keep an eye on this site as we join him for an intimate gig in Surrey next month ahead of that arena tour in May including a date at Wembley Arena.
