SONG OF THE WEEK: Danmark’s Dynamite by Alphabeat (8 July 2021)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

Songs for national football teams are a tricky thing to get right but this anthem to Denmark’s Euros 2020 team is as good as England’s Three Lions from a quarter of a century ago.

  • Read on for reasons including why you should check out Alphabeat’s last album Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore

Alphabeat had 5 UK hits between 2006 and 2010 and are best known for their top 10 debut with Fascination.

Denmark had a dramatic start to their Euros 2020 campaign with Christian Eriksen receiving lifesaving medical treatment during their opening game against Finland. They eventually made the semi finals going out 2-1 after extra time to home side England at Wembley.

Danmark’s Dynamite builds on the almighty wonky pop hooks that the band are most loved for, is their 1st single predominantly in Danish but still contains enough English lyrics to make sense to those who don’t speak that language, referencing the ‘red and white’ of the team’s strip and nation’s flag.

Alphabeat have released 4 albums in the UK, the last being Don’t Know What’s Cool Anymore in 2019. We said of that when it was an album of the month for us in November: ‘It’s an album that’s definitely one of the most surprising, uplifting and fun pop highlights of 2019.’

Coronavirus saw them rescheduling and then cancelling their only London gig planned initially for 2020 and 2021. We were delighted to catch them however for their 1st London gig for 6 years in 2019 at Oslo, Hackney.

Danmark’s Dynamite shows they’ve lost none of their songwriting ability to lift hearts and if they’re not quite scaling the charts in the same way that they were at their peak then we still can’t wait to see them play live in the UK soon.
