Writer Lucy Prebble (Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, ENRON) adapts Luke Harding’s book about the assassination of Alexander Litvenenko with a cast featuring Reece Shearsmith and Gavin Spokes. Runs at the Old Vic 20/8 through 5/10. Tickets
3. Size up how Big starring Jay McGuiness and Kimberley Walsh measures up at the Dominion
The 1988 film starred Tom Hanks and 8 years later a musical spin-off was shortlisted for 5 Tonys. Stars McGuiness and Walsh have both graduated to the West End via boy/girl bands courtesy of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing. This runs at the gigantic Dominion with a supporting cast including Matthew Kelly and Wendi Peters. Its 1st preview has slipped from 6 to 10/9, never a good sign, and it runs through to 2/11/19. 4. Metronomy Forever album released
Single Salted Caramel Ice Cream was our Song Of The Month in July and we saw the band at All Points East this year. 6th album Metronomy Forever is out 13/9. Tickets are available for a European tour later this year including 2 nights at Camden Roundhouse.
5. Pet Shop Boys in My Beautiful Laundrette
Pet Shop Boys (also mentioned in number 1) write 4 pieces of incidental music in this play by Hanif Kureishi based on the screenplay for his 1985 film which starred Daniel Day Lewis and Gordon Warnecke, who returns this time as the father of the part he played originally. 6. Downton Abbey film hits screens
We saw Dame Maggie Smith at the Bridge this year in A German Life and she’s definitely the main draw as this celebrated ITV series makes its celluloid debut 13/9. Much of the cast is returning alongside monstagigz favourites including Imelda Staunton and Tuppence Middleton.
7. Charli XCX releases Charli LP
3rd album Charli is out 20/9 and it features a Christine and the Queens collaboration (see above). It’s 5 years since its predecessor Sucker and 4 since she made our Gig Of The Year shortlist. Her best song remains the UK chart topper and US top 10 hit I Love It that she wrote for Icona Pop.
8. Torch Song at the new Turbine Theatre
We caught this update of Torch Song Trilogy last year on Broadway and at its heart in this UK version is a revelatory performance by Matthew Needham. Runs to 13/10 at the new Turbine Theatre. Review. Tickets
9. Strictly returns
The BBC’s Saturday night ratings winner returns for its 17th season with a cast that includes new judge Motsi Mabuse and stars including Everybody’s Talking About Jamie‘s Michelle Visage from 7/9/19.
