Kinky Boots was a nominee in ourĀ monstas for musical of 2015 and Cyndi Lauper, who rose to fame in the 80s as a pop star rivalling Madonna, was one of its authors.

Unlike Madonna, Cyndi’s very much ploughed her own furrow since Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Detour is as far from what one might expect she’d do next as Kinky Boots was.

It’s an album of country covers that Dolly Parton might have recorded and, like Ms Parton, Cyndi’s touring the UK to promote it including a stop at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, a venue Dolly bossed when she played the legends’ Sunday afternoon slot two years ago.

Detour is an occasionally quirky choice of songs (which you might expect) yet both by turns comic (You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly, a duet with Vince Gill) and mournful (Misty Blue) which you might not associate with this versatile 62-year-old.

Other guest stars include Alison Krauss, Jewel, Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris to add proceedings a touch of authority. This set isn’t anywhere near Cyndi’s career highs (we’d start with Time After Time, Girls, True Colours and much of Kinky Boots) but it’s an interesting, ahem, Detour and should make for the basis of an entertaining tour.
