SINGLE REVIEW: Black Magic by Little Mix

Are the schools out yet? Welcome to the perfect pop soundtrack of the summer.

SAMPLE LYRIC: ‘All the girls on the block knocking at my door, Wanna know what it is make the boys want more.’

Alarm bells may have been ringing in camp Little Mix when they reportedly ditched what was to be their 3rd album late last year. From those songs however has emerged a writing credit for the 2011 X Factor winners on the new Britney Spears single.

Black Magic is their 10th single (out 10 July), likely 3rd number 1, and only release they’ve not co-written except covers Cannonball and Word Up. It’s a bit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/I Wanna Dance With Somebody 80s with a B*Witched vibe and that magnificent chanted sample lyric (above).

The video’s clearly aimed at the US and has a touch of film Hocus Pocus about it. In fact, our only reservations are about the childishness of the video (is unintended farting in pop videos funny?) and whether we’d be quite so forgiving if One Direction‘s next single featured the lyric: ‘Take a sip from a secret potion, Gonna make you fall in love, For a spell that can’t be broken, One drop should be enough’?

Monstagigz has seen the ‘little muffins’ live twice (Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith in 2013 and The 02 in 2014) and was impressed by how effortless they made the transition to arenas seem. Black Magic looks set to be #1 from now until when the schools go back so maybe that lack of a Little Mix writing credit shouldn’t really matter.

Expect that third album before Christmas and another arena tour early next year.
