Shedinburgh is the name given for events running through 10 October hosted by the Young Vic in London which featured at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the venue’s intimate Maria Theatre.
Moss is playing keyboards and singing occasionally and is joined by vocalist Collette Guitart, the alternate lead in Single?.
Moss explains beforehand: ‘I’m gonna be sharing some songs I’ve written solo, over the years, that have lived in my voicememos, unlistened-to – until now! They’re mostly sad little songs written when I was sad, so if you’re a fan of the upbeat, comic vibes of my work in things like SIX and Why Am I So Single? – then please prepare to be somewhat disappointed! The singing (not by me) will be great, though.’
We think it’s more than a decade since we’ve last been in this space (Barbarians), have an unallocated front row seat and a great view of a nervous Moss charmingly explain the stories behind each of 10 songs she and Guitart perform for us in an hour-long show.

Moss’ voice sounds like La Roux to us, she explains she’s been having singing lessons and also that she’s engaged to be married which has informed some of the songwriting.
The opening song’s hook is But What If It’s Not but Moss explains it’s actually called Catch 22 which she now finds curious because it’s not about a Catch 22 situation.
She says: ‘These are songs written for myself not for characters in musicals. The reason behind sharing them is that it’s quite sad for them to be just left on my phone with no-one to hear them.’

Angel Of The North was written about ‘an ill-advised coffee with an ex’ and benefits from the added vocal power and emotion Guitart is able to bring to it.
A Game (sample lyric: ‘I wanna be your A Game‘) is written about the person she is now to be married to.

If you’re a fan of Moss’ musical work it’s fascinating to hear how contemporary her own work sounds including Lost from Single? She describes its inclusion because ‘it’s the most successful I’ve been writing something with a complicated series of emotions with coherence’.
Moss’ chat is warm and engaging and we appreciate her explanation for Waiting For My Love To Arrive that it’s easier to write when sad and not happy.
Magnum Opus also shows a charming level of self-deprocation with its: ‘baby it’s OK to just shut up’ advice.
some songs i wrote has been an entertaining run-through of some personal Lucy Moss songs giving an insight into her writing process but also what a talent she is.
