WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2
Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo presents this very Top Of The Pops-styled video by Jonas Åkerlund with Nile Rodgers (BST Hyde Park).
- Read on for reasons including how this is Duran’s best single since 1993 classic Ordinary World
The hyperreal throwback to vintage TV performances is in sharp contrast to the lyric with its ‘Be Free To Love’ hook which could be read as naive but we’re choosing to interprete as defiance particularly with June being Pride month.
What we love about the video is that it’s not merely recreating the past but exaggerating it into something almost futuristic and timeless which matches the cyberfunk of the music.
Free To Love is Duran’s best single since 1993 classic Ordinary World and yet almost its polar opposite.
More than four decades after they first described themselves as ‘Chic meets the Sex Pistols’, the once outlandish claim appears to be gaining in credibility.
We heard the song 1st and thought the high note near its close might be a stretch for Le Bon live and we love how he almost acknowledges it in the video.
Free To Love has already made its way into Duran’s setlist and we look forward to hearing from friends how their 2026 BST at Hyde Park gig goes next month.
The almighty Scissor Sisters support (The 02, 2025) and check out live album It’s 10pm … Do You Know Where Your Sisters Are? for proof how thrilling that will be.
