THEATRE REVIEW: Operation Mincemeat new UK cast at the Fortune Theatre, London

By Neil Durham

WORTH A LOOK?: *****

WHEN?: Saturday 31 May 2025, booking through 28 February 2026 RUNTIME: 130 minutes (including a 20-minute interval)

The Broadway production of this musical starring its original British cast is up for 4 Tonys on Sunday (9 June 2025) and to celebrate we made our 3rd visit to this show.

  • Read on for reasons including how we couldn’t recommend this new musical more highly

Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical was written by 3 of its original cast – David Cumming, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts – as well as Felix Hagan.

It tells the story of the 1943 British deception operation to disguise the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War Two.

What makes it different to other films of the same tale is that it is a musical with its 5-strong cast playing the many dozens of characters.

We brought 2 friends to see it for the 1st time and although they loved its energy from the off it was only really after the interval that they started to fall in love with its quick wit, clever wordplay and individual telling of what for some might by quite a familiar story.

Original cast member Jak Malone, now performing on Broadway, won our 2024 monsta for Best Supporting Theatre Actor and for us it’s his heart-tugging performance of the show’s best song Dear Bill (watch above) which is the show’s highpoint.

For context and for it to make most sense without actually having seen the show please read our original review from back in 2023.

We saw from left to right below Roshani Abbey (as Jean Leslie and others), Geri Allen ( as Johnny Bevan and others, who’s been with the show a little longer than the new cast), Peter McGovern (as Charles Cholmondeley and others), Alex Young (as Ewen Montagu and others) and Danny Becker (as Hester Leggatt and others).

On our 1st visit we said: ‘We loved the dynamic between typist Jean Leslie and boss Leggatt as the former grew under the latter’s guidance with her initial frustration expressed in song All The Ladies that is as good as anything Little Mix might’ve done.’

The original cast won Oliviers for Best New Musical and Malone for Best Actor In A Supporting Role In A Musical and the good news is that this new cast resemble their predecessors physically and never fail to conjure up a similar atmosphere.

Mincemeat is nominated for the following Tonys: Best Musical, Best Book Of A Musical, Best Original Score and Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role In A Musical once again for Malone.

Its Fortune Theatre run began in March 2023 and was scheduled to finish in July 2023. But rave reviews have seen it run and run and we really couldn’t recommend it more highly.
