SONG OF THE WEEK: Got To Have Love by Pulp (week beginning Tuesday 27 May 2025)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2

This is the triumphant return to form from a band who release their 1st new album for 24 years in 10 days.

  • Read on for reasons including how Got To Have Love is as good as anything on Different Class

Lead singer Jarvis Cocker spells out ‘L-O-V-E’ reminding of former glories during a spoken word section which includes: ‘And you sit on your backside for 25 years and you hedge your bets …And try and fail and work on an album and build a jail and lock yourself away … from the 1 thing that could save you.’

Remarkably Got To Have Love is as good as anything on best album Different Class from 1995 and yet its evocation of northern soul with an extremely catchy chorus and understandable sentiment enhanced by the Wigan Casino footage of the video succeeds in exploring a sound that isn’t just rehashing what’s worked most memorably for the super group previously.

Who can resist Cocker when he’s asking: ‘What do you need? … I mean, do you even know how to spell it? Well, I’ll spell it for you, yeah. It goes L-O-V-E.’

Lead single Spike Island was our May song of the month. We said: ‘While Spike Island may wish to lyrically convey some of the magic of a track like Sorted For Es and Whizz, it’s only got us swaying slightly rather than burning up the dancefloor like a Disco 2000.’

More – out 6 June – is the band’s 1st new album in 24 years and they tour including gigs at The 02 in London in June.
