GIG REVIEW: Warmduscher at Papillon, Southampton

By Carron Stacey, A Humdrum Mum

WHEN?: 31 October and tour runs through 29 November 2024

Warmduscher appears to have reached the ranks of one of the bands we’ve seen the most, alongside Welly, Adam Ant, Duran Duran, Shed Seven and Peter Hook!

Not sure Warmduscher would be happy to be in that grouping, but they did support Duran at Hyde Park 2023.(Only about 100 of us intersected in that Venn diagram but boy did we enjoy it!)

This tour, we have the pleasure of friends, the Welsh/Pompey couple, who’ve never seen them before. The air is ripe with expectation. Welsh Girl has bought a Cleopatras t-shirt, will party. We hope they love them as much as we do.

After a great support set by Keg (think Black Country New Road mixed with Sports Team and Squid), the quintet start with Pure at the Heart, from their new album Too Cold to Hold. They’ve certainly quietened down on this album, adding jazz vibes to their already hip hop, post-punk sound. They’ve also dropped the boiler suit attire on stage, and I swear I’ve never seen Clams Baker Jr with his cap and glasses off for so long during a set.

Favourites Standing on the Corner, Midnight Dipper, Wild Flowers, Disco Peanuts go down a storm, with Clams giving the mic to audience members to sing along for him.

The venue, Papillon, which is a renovated old church, is an intimate venue with a great balcony, which is where we viewed from (due to my still-broken shoulder).

However it did mean we missed watching the drummer, but having seen them so many times, I didn’t mind this time. I did miss being in the mosh pit, but it was good to look down on it.

It was also good to see one fan pass shots (tequila?) through the audience to Clams on two occasions. Cute. Having agreed that Warmduscher are an exhausting band to watch, both newbs also agree that they were great live and that there is something really special about watching them.

We did miss Twitchin in the Kitchen, so it had to be played in our kitchens when we got home. My safe mosh pit.
