WORTH A LOOK?: *****
Last year we described Mae Muller’s I Wrote A Song as ‘the UK’s best Eurovision entry since Gina G’ and we’d say the same of this extremely catchy and tasteful track which draws on Pet Shop Boys influences.
- Read on for reasons including why Dizzy is exactly the sort of song the UK should be entering for Eurovision
The former Years and Years’ frontman was born in Harrogate, venue for the 1982 Eurovision after Bucks Fizz’s triumph, and Alexander would have been 5 years old when Ms G finished 8th in Oslo but topped the charts back home.
The BBC has similar chart-topping hopes for Dizzy and 1 of the things that impressed us about Alexander’s recent Graham Norton interview is how much he loves his Eurovision, his knowledge of acts like Pastora Soler and his clear embracing of the unpredictability of an event which sees you ranked against your competitors.
Co-written with Dua Lipa songwriter Daniel Harle, Dizzy isn’t quite the banger we were hoping for but it is extremely catchy and we think it’s more likely to top the charts at home than win Eurovision.
But we do think that the star of TV’s It’s A Sin has an understanding of the drama needed to do it justice live on a Eurovision stage and his arena tour and Glastonbury experience will also work in his favour.
Dizzy is exactly the sort of song the UK should be entering for Eurovision and Alexander’s fame is the stuff of every ESC fan’s dreams but this entry is not quite as go for the jugular as Croatia’s Baby Lasagna or Marcus and Martinus in Melodifestivalen so we shouldn’t expect the show to return to these shores just yet.
