SONG OF THE MONTH: Scared Of Heights by Hera Bjork (February 2024)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2

Iceland’s Eurovision selection show Söngvakeppnin starts tomorrow and Bjork competes in the 2nd semi final on Saturday (24 February) with this uptempo gospel-influenced pop.

  • Read on for reasons including how 1 of this song’s writers worked with Dadi Freyr

The song is co-written by Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir – who we saw perform live with former Eurovision entrant Dadi Freyr in London including the song Feel The Love they released together – Ferras Alqaisi, Jaro Omar and Michael Burek.

Scared is a real soaring bop that reminds of Madonna’s Like A Prayer and we love the carefree nature of the chorus which boasts the lyrics: ‘I feel it coming, Been here before and never got it right, Baby I’m wondering, If falling in love has got me Scared Of Heights.’

We saw Bjork finish 19th in 2010’s Eurovision in Dusseldorf, the year before she was runner up with Someday in Denmark’s Eurovision selection show and in 2019 she was 4th with the ballad Moving On in Songvakeppnin behind winners Hatari.

We said of Moving On: ‘Eurovision season is in full swing and the song we most want to see competing in Tel Aviv in May is a gorgeous ballad with a gigantic dramatic key change sung beautifully by a former contestant who finished 19th in 2010 in Oslo in a completely different style.

Moving On by Hera Björk (listen below) takes part for Iceland in the final of Söngvakeppnin 2019 on 2 March but will face tough competition from the hardcore growl-fest that is Hatrið mun sigra (Hate Will Prevail) by the photogenic Hatari.’

Hatari co-wrote Bjork’s biggest competition this year, Bashar Murad’s Wild West, but we’re hoping Bjork’s always strong vocals and catchy pop will see her win Iceland’s Eurovision ticket more than a decade after her last success.
