SONG OF THE WEEK: The Hype by Sigrid (week beginning 22 September 2023)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

There’s something extraordinarily self aware about the winner of the BBC Music’s Sound of 2018 title penning a tune asking: ‘Honestly, did I live up to the hype?’

  • Read on for reasons including why it’s live where Sigrid outshines any hype

Of course lyrically this sentiment is seen through the lens of a relationship at its end but also, rather heartbreakingly, it was also a song we heard during the BBC1 coverage of the defeat of England during their Women’s World Cup Final appearance last month.

Our favourite songs of Sigrid’s are invariably the dancefloor bangers but more fulfilling is her mastery of melancholy and who could be fail to be moved by a lyric asking: ‘Tell me, did you ever love me?
Did you ever love me, did you ever love me?’, ‘Don’t wanna go back to the place, so insecure
Was I not the girl you signed up for?’ and ‘Cause you held me, held me like a trophy
Then left the party when the magic died.’?

This month Sigrid celebrated 27th birthday and up next for her is a 22-date club tour of Norway playing multiple shows at venues in October and November.

We had hoped to have seen her at this year’s always glorious Victorious Festival although that didn’t quite work for us although it’s live where Sigrid always lives up to the hype.

We last saw her headlining Wembley Arena in 2022 and wrote: ‘This then is a gig that’s a lot of fun and it’s the most enjoyable we’ve ever seen Sigrid – Glastonbury this year was also a real high – and if she can keep up the quality of her songwriting there’s no reason why we can’t see her playing far bigger stages.

‘As we leave this venue, alongside thousands of delighted fans, we glance across to the iconic Wembley Stadium and think that, one day, perhaps in the not-too-distant future even, it would be very lucky to have an older Sigrid Solbakk Raabe playing on its stage.’

It’s a sentiment underlined once more by the brilliance of this new material.
