SONG OF THE WEEK: Intacto by Agoney (week beginning 8 September 2023)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

We’re in South America as we write and there’s 1 Spanish-speaking song we hear everywhere and it’s this 1 with its reflection on a difficult relationship and determination to put an end to it to a moody, dancefloor-friendly bop.

  • Read on for reasons including why we need Agoney to win Benidorm Festival in 2024

The appropriately-named Agoney sings: ‘Y ya no quedan más palabras que me puedan herir’ (‘And there are no more words that can hurt me’) and ‘No tengo miedo que tus besos vuelvan a atacar’ (‘I’m not afraid that your kisses will attack again’).

He’s wanting to finish it 1st with an abusive lover and we wonder whether he has taken strength from his 2nd place finish in this year’s Spanish Eurovision selection show Benidorm Festival where his song Quiero Arder (I Want To Burn), 1 of our favourites of the year, would have performed so much better in the final in May than the song that won.

We wrote of it back in December 2022 when the songs dropped: ‘Nicknamed ‘the Canary with the golden voice’ because they come from the Canary Islands and found fame on 2017’s TV singing contest Operación Triunfo, this 27-year-old is openly gay and topped the charts in Spain with their debut album Libertad (Liberty) in 2020. Quiero arder reminds these ears of withdrawn Ukrainian 2019 contest entry Siren Song with its dramatic parping horns. The song’s darkness is likely to endear it to juries and if Agoney is as equal to it as their TV talent show experience suggests, this could win or come very close to it in Liverpool in May.’

The performance popped and we’re crossing everything for a swift return to Benidorm Festival for Agoney who deserves the ecstasy of the Eurovision stage.
