WORTH A LOOK?: ****
Proving that finishing 25th in May’s joyous Eurovision Song Contest final in Liverpool doesn’t have to be a career kiss of death, Muller returns with a single that is almost as infectiously catchy as the riot that was I Wrote A Song, April’s song of the month for us.
- Read on for reasons including details of Muller’s debut album and how to see her on tour this year
The problem with Muller’s Liverpool performance was not with the song, which peaked at 9 in the UK and was also a hit in Iceland and Lithuania, but that her vocal was not as strong as many of her competitors in that final.
It’s an argument for the UK to adopt Sweden’s Melodifestivalen Eurovision selection method where songs are sung and presented as they would be in the Eurovision final and the anti-climax of a vocal being weak would never be allowed to happen before a song was selected.
However, we don’t think Eurovision’s popularity in the UK is such that the BBC should go down that route just yet in the search for a song for Malmo in 2024.
What we do want is for TAP Music to continue to find a song that Radio 1 will play – Sam Ryder’s SPACE Man was a number 2 hit in the UK as well as being a contest runner-up that had a better draw and performance – and perhaps also look for a stronger live performance from its act also.
Me, Myself And I is a Muller co-write with Karl Ivert, Kian Sang, and NEIKED and, as with her previous single, we just love the cheeky lyric.
Muller can’t decide between a string of lovers and instead plumps for a spot of self-love: ‘I cut off Charlie, I told him I was sorry (yeah), Then there was Michael, He just wasn’t my type, though, There was Ethan, He wanted something deeper (yeah), I had to leave them, I think I found a keeper
It’s Me, Myself and I.’
The video feels a little darker and less well-funded than its predecessor but we’re looking forward to catching up with Mae on tour this year at Southsea’s glorious Victorious Festival this summer and at Camden Roundhouse in November.
On 15 September there’s no little matter of Muller’s debut album – titled Sorry I’m Late – to also look forward to. We’ve already heard the hit Better Days, also featuring Neiked, and I Just Came To Dance and the album is already 1 of 2023’s upcoming collections that we are most looking forward to.
