WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2
Today is Kylie’s 55th birthday and this comeback electropop song is her biggest hit single in the UK since Into The Blue made number 12 in 2014.
- Read on for reasons including how this is Kylie’s best single for over a decade
It is co-written by Norwegian Ina Wroldsen who has penned hits by many acts including Clean Bandit, Steps and The Saturdays and is 1 of only 3 tracks on upcoming album Tension without a Minogue writing credit.
There’s a certain bravery when approaching one’s 16th album in including material that isn’t as authentic to you as a song that you have played a part in composing but Padam is as instantly catchy as songs with which Minogue made her name including the awesome Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.
When we 1st saw the song’s title we assumed it had something to do with Edith Piaf’s song Padam but it’s actually a reference as simple as the beat of one’s heart.
And this is certainly a cool dancefloor classic to set the heartbeat racing. We haven’t seen Kylie live since Kiss Me Once at London’s 02 but can’t wait to catch up with her again not least because the quality of her material is at a high.
Previous collection Disco was an album of the month for us back in the dark lockdown days of November 2020 and we said of that: ‘Minogue’s more renowned for her killer singles than albums and we’d put Disco right up there with her best collections as a more grown up Light Years and as exuberant and fun as Rhythm Of Love.’
We think this is Minogue’s best single since Timebomb in 2012 – happy birthday Kylie!
