The potential of a Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden in 2024 – the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s Waterloo win – rests on the shoulders of 2012 victor Loreen.

Her entry is no Euphoria – the song she won with in 2012 – but it’s probably our favourite song and performance of 2023 so far.

It was the big favourite to win this year’s greatest show on Earth and Swedish Eurovision selection series Melodifestivalen and we said: ‘It reminds us a little of the ethnicity of Madonna’s Frozen in its relaxed middle 8 but it is the claustrophobic staging and hooks of a Cazzi Opeia co-write that has us most buzzing for this. Sure, Loreen’s diction can be worked on ahead of the finalen but we think this would do very well in Liverpool in May.’

It’s also the bookmakers’ favourite to triumph in Liverpool on 13 May but it is in the tougher of the 2 semis – Tuesday’s semi 1 – and squares up there to its main rival, Finland’s Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä.

There’s a momentum with Finland but our sneaking suspicion is that juries will favour the superstar package that Tattoo offers with hugely impressive and memorable visuals (see main picture).

There have been reports that Loreen’s lighting rig may be too heavy for the Liverpool venue’s roof to bear and we won’t know for sure whether that’s the case until rehearsals start on Sunday 30 April.

What is for sure is that we think there could be no more apt venue than Sweden for the 2024 Eurovision and the country has chosen an entry which has the best chance to make that happen.
