SONG OF THE MONTH: Kings And Queens by Ava Max (April 2020)

WORTH A LOOK?: *****

OUT: now

At just 162 seconds, this pop gem manages to combine so many influences and on first listen we’d describe it as very classic Eurovision sounding, both very ABBA and Ace of Base.

Repeat listens reveal a Gwen Stefani hook – check. Nik Kershaw guitar break? Check. The chorus of: ‘To all of the queens who are fighting alone, baby you’re not dancing on your own’ is pure Lady Gaga.

We knew very little of Ms Max before we heard this track and a little light research shows she’s Wisconsin-born and topped the charts in 26 countries two years ago with her debut single Sweet But Psycho.

Since then she’s released five other singles and we’re still waiting for that debut album.

As we write, Kings And Queens is number 41 in the UK singles charts which points to a considerable undeserved underappreciation that we can’t explain.
