PREVIEW: Melodifestivalen heat 4

WHEN?: 7pm Saturday 27 February on SVT (link to watch below)

Melodifestivalen 2016 has been hit by fresh controversy with the leaking of a clip of the big favourite Youniverse by Molly Sandén. Today 30-second clips of all heat 4 entries were made available.

  • Read on for our predictions for the seven heat 4 entries and where to find the clips

  1. Eclipse PREDICTION: Andra Chansen

It’s Hard Rock Hallelujah all over again as heat 4 starts with a heavy metal act. We’re not big fans of the genre and the 30-second clip isn’t changing our minds but traditionally something of this style makes the final. Let’s hope it’s not from this heat. An absolute rock horror in its fuller form. We’d love it to be bottom 2 but suspect it will do better.

2. Dolly Style PREDICTION: 5th

We loved last year’s entry Hello! Hi! and Rollercoaster is co-written by Eurovision winner Thomas G:son and it’s as uptempo, fun and ever so slightly bonkers as one would wish it to be. It’s our big favourite this week with Linda second but we think it might struggle. Picture above via Facebook courtesy Dolly Style. Fab-U-Lous in its fuller form. Will need all the help it can get to progress though. ‘We’re on a Rollercoaster …’

3. Martin Stenmarck PREDICTION: Bottom 2

Martin won MF in 2005 with Las Vegas beating Alcazar, Nanne Gronvall and Shirley Clamp and we’ve never quite forgiven him. This sounds grown-up, moody if a little anthemic and a million miles from Las Vegas. *sadface*. A chance for him to show us what he can do vocally though.

4. Linda Bengtzing PREDICTION: Bottom 2

La Bengtzing’s one of our favourite ever MF stars and this is a return to the old school schlager that made her name. It’s in Swedish apart from the English title. It’s not quite of the order of the holy trio of Jag ljuger så bra,  Hur svårt kan det va? or Alla flickor but we’ve everything crossed for the full three-minute effort. Looking back through those old clips, Linda was always at her best when she was cutting loose and doing her own thing – everything crossed she feels that free 27/2. Boasting very retro 80s stylings, this bottomed the dress rehearsal audience vote. This week’s After Dark?

5. Frans PREDICTION: Final

A jaunty pop song from a male soloist new to Melodifestivalen. Sounding a bit Britpop indie also. Stormed the dress rehearsal audience vote, beating big favourite Molly Style. We’re not hearing it here so it must be in the performance in its longer version. Sprinting up the betting also.

6. Panetoz PREDICTION: Andra Chansen

Panetoz return for their second crack at Mello and this is bags of fun, uptempo and tropical. Could pull a surprise. They finished 9th in 2014 with Efter Solsken. We’re absolutely loving the longer version. So much better and authentic than last week’s electro Lion King tribute. Could Panetoz and Frans elbow Molly Style into Andra Chansen?

7. Molly Sandén PREDICTION: Final

We hate the title but she’s the big favourite and there’s a sense perhaps this year that SVT thinks it’s her turn to win. Always difficult to tell what a ballad’s going to be like from such a short clip but we’re not convinced it will be victorious come 12/3. Much prefer Oscar Zia’s Human after hearing the lengthier version but it’s a bit more uptempo than the big ballad we were expecting. Molly to struggle?
