SONG OF THE MONTH: Dancing With The Europeans by Suede (August 2025)

WORTH A LOOK?: *****

Frontman Brett Anderson explains the idea for the song came from an exhilarating show in Spain where there was a great connection with the audience despite the personal low the singer was experiencing away from the gig.

He says: ‘I thought of the phrase ‘dancing with the Europeans’. There’s something about that word ‘Europeans’ that I really like. The phrase summed up the experience of looking for connection in a disconnected world. Where do we find those bonds with our fellow human beings? This show in Spain that we did, it broke down those barriers.’

Anderson’s right that Dancing With The Europeans feels optimistic in a very goth rock way countering the mood of the previous 2 songs we’ve heard from new album Antidepressants despite its chorus which offers: ‘Oh, with a European stain within me and a European suffering in me, Dancing With The Europeans.’

It’s in marked contrast with Britpop with London this summer seeing swarms of fans in Oasis T-shirts as the band plays a stadium tour which includes multiple Wembley gigs.

Antidepressants lead single Disintegration was a song of the month for us in June when we said ‘it wears its goth-flavoured punk influences defiantly’. 2nd single Trance State has followed and the band play gigs in London at the Southbank Centre after the album’s release. Tickets

We’re writing this in Barcelona and that inspirational gig wasn’t the Barcelona show we joined them for in 2022 but we reunite for a recently announced Southbank Centre show later this month which promises Antidepressants and Other Post-Punk Pick-Me-Ups.
