SONG OF THE WEEK: Shook by Sugababes (week beginning Thursday 24 July 2025)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan, and Siobhán Donaghy were the original Sugababes and it feels only right that more than a quarter of a century after 1st forming they should be back together under that name and releasing some of their strongest ever material.

  • Read on for reasons including how Shook is the sound of a band back at the top of their game

We’re particularly enjoying the verse Siobhan sings solo in Shook which includes some memorable lines including: ‘Do you want to dance with Madonna? Hold my hand let’s reach for nirvana. You want chill I’ll be marijuana.’

Shook was written by the group with Anya James and Jon Shave, formerly of Xenomania, and now the group independently release and self finance their own work.

The original lineup reformed as Mutya Keisha Siobhan in 2013 and regained their original name in 2019. Recent singles have included Jungle and Weeds and they headline Brighton Pride next month with dates planned through September.

It’s taken a while to get back to this point but Shook is the sound of a band at the top of their game.
