SONG OF THE MONTH 69 by Self Esteem (April 2025)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

69 is the 2nd single from Rebecca Lucy Taylor’s 3rd album A Complicated Woman and is as sexual as its title suggests.

  • Read on for reasons including how to see Self Esteem at the Duke Of York’s Theatre in London

Both musically and lyrically it reminds us of Sex-era Madonna with lines including: ‘If you beg, I will peg’ and, perhaps, the more recognisably Self Esteem: ‘Choking is superfluous, consent serves the best of us.’

Taylor’s lyrics are typically written in direct, colloquial language and that’s very much the case here with video turning from self-help group, to confidence circle like Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour through full-on dance as therapy session.

Taylor was inspired with the confidence to pursue a solo career after watching RuPaul’s Drag Race – ‘that whole ethos of not being ashamed to be confident or brilliant’ – and Self Esteem’s 2nd solo LP Prioritise Pleasure was an album of the month for us in August 2022.

1st single from the album Focus Is Power reminds of Taylor’s more refined moments and features the House Gospel Choir.

A Humdrum Mum reviewed Self Esteem live at Victorious Festival in 2022 and we caught her later on that tour at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith.

We catch her too as she previews that album next month as she plays a run of gigs at Duke Of York’s Theatre in London’s West End.

Self Esteem has proved herself in theatre and is now 1 of our favourite pop stars and so we’re looking forward to something extra special.
