GIG REVIEW: Marcus & Martinus at 02 Islington Academy

By Neil Durham

WORTH A LOOK?: ***

WHEN? Wednesday 5 March 2025, tour runs through 23 August 2025

SETLIST: Like It Like It; Die For You; Gimme Your Love; Follow Me; Wonder; When All The Lights Go Out; Wicked Game; Heartbeat; Together; Plystre på deg; Wild Love; Air; Love Flow; We Are Not The Same; Another Life; The Room; Girls; One Flight Away; Elektrisk; Unforgettable

We weren’t expecting that noise – it’s a long time since we’ve been to a sold-out gig where the teenage shrieking is that ear-splitting in response to every little move these 23-year-old Norwegian twins make on stage.

  • Read on for reasons including how the duo’s older material is treated with the greatest appreciation

M&M won Melodifestivalen last year, finished 9th for Sweden in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest released their 4th album with the same title as the MF winner – Unforgettable – and tour Europe this spring and summer including this sold out gig at London’s 02 Academy Islington.

Marcus (above and below left) tells us this is only his 2nd visit to London, he’s wearing an England football shirt with a number 26 on the back and appears to be embracing his new surroundings.

Martinus, on the other hand, appears a little less engaged and is dressed all in black and carries himself like a rapper which we weren’t expecting following their appearances in last year’s MF and Eurovision.

The twins are backed by a live band (see below) which includes a guitarist, keyboardist, drummer and dancer.

The twins may only be 23 but they were child stars in Norway which is why they’ve such an extensive back catalogue.

It’s the older material in particular which is treated with greater appreciation with an audience that perhaps grew up with these singers and there are even a smattering of parents with children including 1 pairing we overhear about this being their 1st ever gig.

For us the quality of the music is variable and, while we enjoy new single Wonder, it’s really their MF hits that we’re here for, Air and closing song Unforgettable.

There’s not a lot of room to move or think straight in this 800-capacity venue and so we join the gays at the back bar to gossip about this year’s Melodifestivalen final (preview) and what the future might hold for Marcus and Martinus.

On this showing, they appeared to accentuate their differences so much we wondered whether a period trying to establish themselves as solo stars before the inevitable nostalgia-fuelled reunion might be just the ticket.
