SONG OF THE WEEK: His Car by Matt Terry (week beginning Saturday 30 March 2024)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

2016 X Factor winner Terry came out as gay this month and released this single which includes the hook: ‘I used to kiss him in the back of His Car, hiding from the world who we are, I’m sorry for every single lie.’

  • Read on for reasons including how this is a leap forwards in honesty and we hope it’s rewarded

It’s hugely self critical and will ring a bell with anyone who has ever worried what the reaction will be to coming out including also the lyric: ‘You can count on me to be a hypocrite, Told your family about me, I never did, I can’t believe how long I lived like this, Now all I see in that mirror, a hypocrite.’

We hope Terry is finding catharsis as well as inspiration from his coming out because its brutal honesty and no-nonsense video deserve a wider audience for a singer songwriter whose only solo hit was When Christmas Comes Around which made number 3 in the UK in 2016.

Musically Terry gives us his soul-baring over a tinkling piano and his trademark croon expressing regret: ‘I told him you should go and bury your heart, my parents won’t ever know about us, I keep wishing that I could go back in time to apologise.’

It’s a huge leap forwards in both honesty and courage and we hope he’s rewarded with the recognition he deserves.

We saw Terry live supporting Saara Aalto at Under the Bridge in Chelsea, London in 2018 (see picture below).

We’re very much looking forward to a new album fuelled with the sincerity shown here which could well prove to be 1 of the most interesting and affecting of the year.
