SONG OF THE WEEK: Real Love by RoseeLu (week beginning Monday February 12 2024)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2

Denmark have won the Eurovision Song Contest 3 times but haven’t qualified for a final since Leonora finished 12th with Love Is Forever in 2019 in Tel Aviv.

  • Read on for reasons including how 3 of Danish pop sensations Alphabeat co-wrote this song

This year it selects its entry on Saturday (17 February) in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and this song is 1 of 8 competing there.

3 of its writers were in 00s Danish pop sensations Alphabeat – Anders Bønløkke, Anders Stig Gehrt Nielsen and Stine Bramsen – with Jakob Groth Bastiansen, Joachim Ersgaard and Rosa Frydensbjerg making up the rest of the writing team.

RoseeLu is singer and songwriter Rosa Frydensbjerg who has her breakthrough in 2021 with single Playing Alone.

Real Love asks whether it’s just a spark, or true love, and contains plenty of Alphabeat pop stardust recalling Adele’s Rolling In The Deep-type clipped guitar in its verses, while singing poetically about ‘a butterfly with wounded wings’ and chanting: ‘What we’re feeling!’

In 2019 we reviewed Alphabeat’s last London gig at Oslo, Hackney: saying: ‘Anders G, in particular, seems to be loving being back in the spotlight and dives into the crowd at the gig’s close to make the most of the fans’ adulation.

‘We get the impression that Stine is the heart and soul of the band and she seems genuinely thrilled by the London response – as were we. We’re only not giving this 5* because we suspect the band has even better within them to give us.’

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024 is its 54th edition and will be held at the DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, and will be hosted by Sara Bro and Stéphanie Surrugue while broadcast on DR1.

Real Love is far from a nailed-on winner and will need your vote. We see its main competition coming from Mirrorball Of Hope by Aura Dione and Ublu’s Planetary Hearts.

We’ve always felt Alphabeat would be brilliant at Eurovision, can’t wait for at least some of them to dip their songwriting toes in the water and hope for some success for them in 2024.
