WORTH A LOOK?: ****
Rock quartet Cyan Kicks finished runners up in Finland’s Eurovision selection show UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) in 2022 and on Saturday (10 February 2024) return again with this song.
- Read on for reasons including who Cyan Kicks’ main UMK competition is
Last year Käärijä achieved Finland’s 2nd best result in 56 attempts with Cha Cha Cha which delighted the crowd in Liverpool far more than the international TV audience.
In 2022 Cyan Kicks’ Hurricane was beaten by the established rock band The Rasmus who managed 21st with Jezebel some way off the country’s best ever result when Lordi won with Hard Rock Hallelujah in 2006.
UMK is normally an entertaining show and this year the authors of the upbeat, rocky and slightly more polished effort than their previous entry – Elize Ryd, Niila Perkkiö, Susanna Alexandra, Chris Walla, Zakk, Cervini – don’t have a Käärijä to worry about.
We’re particularly enjoying the propulsive middle 8 where there’s a ‘follow me’ repeat although performing 2nd in the running order may hinder the band’s chances of success.
We do think their main competition will be from a similar novelty-type entry to Cha Cha Cha with Windows95Man performing last with the catchy No Rules!
