SONG OF THE WEEK: Oblivion by Margaret Berger (week beginning Monday 8 January 2024)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

Berger 1st competed in the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway in 2013 finishing 4th in the Malmö Arena.

11 years on and she returns to Norway’s Eurovision selection show Melodi Grand Prix for the 1st time since with an electronic dance music entry that’s not quite so jarring and angular yet fantastic as previous effort I Feed You My Love.

We were in Malmö Arena for the final that year and, along with Anouk’s Birds, Berger’s Feed was 1 of our favourites and we would expect her Oblivion to make it through to the 3 February finalen from Saturday’s (13 January 2024) heat.

The lyric asks the listener for abandonment with initial questioning (‘Is this the face you have been searching for this time?’) and then a definitive: ‘We can take it higher to Oblivion.’

Musically we’re big fans of Alison Goldfrapp and these bold, undulating yet catchy synths exploding into a chorus of ecstatic exuberance would not be out of place in her repertoire.

3 songs advance from Saturday’s heat to the 3 February final and, after hearing the 6 entries, we see Berger making it alongside Gothminister’s rock entry We Come Alive and the anthemic EDM of Mathilde SPZ feat. Chris Archer and Slam Dunk’s Woman Show although we’ve a soft spot for the Murder On The Dancefloor-esque Heart On Fire by Myra.

Can Berger return to Malmö? Big favourites and returning artists KEiiNO compete in Heat 3 with a song we’ll preview soon.
