SONG OF THE WEEK: Sunny Side Of London by Joker Out (week beginning 30 September 2023)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

Joker Out lead singer Bojan woke up on his band’s tour bus this year, saw London’s Palace of Westminster and decided the city should be the venue for the lyric about the quintet’s relationship with its fans.

  • Read on for reasons including how the band is working on an album in English

The lyrics ask: ‘Are you straight, LGBTQ or none of the above? On the Sunny Side Of London you’re as free as a dove. No-one cares about your money or the colour of your face. Happiness and love are the only goals we chase. So, welcome to the Sunny Side Of London.’

Musically, it’s indie with a hint of the 60s-style pop nous they brought to their Eurovision entry Carpe Diem, which was actually in Slovenian, and finished 21st in Liverpool this May.

The band consists of five members: Bojan (vocals), Kris (guitar), Jan (guitar), Nace (bass) and Jure (drums) and they have been touring Europe since Eurovision and preparing an English album.

The band say of this single: ‘The song’s message is simple – whatever life throws at you, music and dance are always the right answer.’

It’s a philosophy which has served them well because Carpe Diem topped the charts back home and they have already released 2 albums.

They add: ‘Sunny Side of London is a metaphor for a Joker Out concert. The concert venue is a place where the band and the fans can feel at peace and at home, a place that accepts everyone no matter the precise geographical location.

‘London was decided as the location on the band’s first UK tour, where the singer songwriter’s first morning view through the window of the tour bus was the Westminster’s Palace covered in the golden sun.

‘Conversely, the music video is also mostly taken from the band’s sold out UK tour of the past summer and shows the incredible relationship they have with their fans.’

For us the band were 1 of many highlights of Eurovision 2023 and we’re very much looking forward to their new English language album.
