SONG OF THE WEEK: Summer Hungover by EYJAA (week beginning Thursday 22 June 2023)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****1/2

This is the 2nd song of the week from Danish/Icelandic duo EYJAA – Sara and Brynja – who contemplate the end of summer in supremely catchy fashion on their latest single.

  • Read on for reasons including how EYJAA were our pick for the Danish Eurovision ticket this year

There’s a 60s influenced whistling hook and lyrics including: ‘Maybe you were more than sand between my toes, just a little too much and now I know’ and its upbeat vibe with a tinge of melancholy will be a song we’ll be playing all season.

Back in October 2021 their single The Wrecking Crew was a song of the week for us and we said then: ‘(EYJAA) aren’t happy but have produced a chorus that is to die for: ”5am hurt is a habit, too late for happy thoughts, feeling a day’s worth of damage and here comes The Wrecking Crew. F*ck trying to make sense of sadness before it makes sense of me, love is as simple as madness and here comes The Wrecking Crew.’

Earlier this year EYJAA’s I Was Gonna Marry Him was our favourite to win the Danish Eurovision ticket in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix although they didn’t make the final 3.

We said then: ‘This Dansk Melodi Grand Prix entry has cowboy movie vibes, boasts Ennio Morricone-ish whistling and, if the Danish/Icelandic duo Sara and Brynja can perform it well live, it’s the 1 to beat here in this strong selection. Co-writer Hansson produced our favourite ever Melodifestivalen winner. Sample lyric: ‘They say I’ll get better with time, but I’m not a bottle of wine.’ There’s a chance of some Popjustice as it’s been selected as Denmark’s entry in the OGAE Second Chance Contest 2023.

If Summer Hungover is about the end of summer, can it really be 1 of our favourite songs of the season already?

Most definitely – we all know that feeling of ‘Mascara on my pillow and my shoulders are red, the only sign of you is the sand in the bed’ and that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the song all summer long.
