WORTH A LOOK?: *****
32-year-old Norwegian singer Dagny Norvoll Sandvik’s debut collection Strangers/Lovers was an album of the month for us in January 2021 and this new single is a complete change in direction.
- Read on for reasons including how to see Dagny in London this weekend at Mighty Hoopla alongside Eurovision winner Loreen
We said of Strangers/Lovers: ‘Highlight is the penultimate Bye Bye Baby which is an uptempo banger on a par with With Every Heartbeat which Robyn would do well to release right now about determination to move on which offers: ‘Now I just wanna leave you behind’ on repeat.’
Heartbreak In The Making is far less electro than its predecessor and the opening bars made us think of The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony with an emphasis on a more country’n’western sound which is increasingly having more mainstream chart success.
Dagny’s always had a way with an affecting lyric also and we’re particularly enjoying the extremely catchy chorus: ‘You’re like a stranger I’ve already met, You’re like a fantasy I’ve had in my head, I’m giving in when I know how it ends, Hey, you feel like a heartbreak in the making.’
Last year we popped our Mighty Hoopla cherry and we’re disappointed not to be able to make it this year for a line-up including both Dagny and 2023 Eurovision winner Loreen.
Strangers/Lovers made number 2 in Norway in 2020 and Heartbreak is already top 20 there. We’d love for Dagny to be enjoying that level of success in the UK too. Dagny plays in London at 02 Islington in April.
