SONG OF THE WEEK: Take Care Of You by Ella Henderson (week beginning 21 June 2020)

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

OUT: now

Last year Ella had a top 10 hit with Jax Jones as a featured artist on his song This Is Real and the tropical house of this new self-penned single feels like a conscious decision to try to repeat that success.

  • Read on for reasons including why it’s time for Ella to release that second album

Ella describes the lyric as ‘a message of self-care – a personal reminder to look after myself, both physically and mentally’. One of her co-writers is Julia Michaels who has had hits herself as well as working with artists including Clean Bandit, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani.

Ella is unusual is that she has the big voice of a reality TV contestant (and indeed found initial fame on ITV’s X Factor) but also writes and has a credit on her 2014 sole chart topper and debut single Ghost.

The album that followed in October that year also made number one and Ella co-wrote all but one of its 18 songs.

Take Care Of You has a more relatable lyric (especially pertinent in lockdown) than the dance hits she’s recently been featured on and we’re very much looking forward to her second album because it’s surely time for it to drop.

We’ve seen her live twice: at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2015 at the end of the campaign for her first album and last year in a tiny venue in east London’s Hoxton Hall (pictured above) where she proved both that her songwriting genius is still intact but also that she can bring the best out of her own material live and there’s still an enthusiastic audience very much wanting to hear more from her.
