AWARDS MONSTAS: Our Best New Play of 2019 so far

We awarded 14 monstas for the best pop, theatre, TV and film of 2018 in December – and here we look at the cream of 2019 so far and what’s to come. The Inheritance, The Ferryman and Oddshaped Balls are previous winners in this category.

  • Read on for our top 5 Best New Plays of 2019 so far and our hopes for the next half year

  1. Cost Of Living, Hampstead Theatre Review

We said: ‘Life is tough for so many people and theatre that reflects that and infuses the heartache with some humour makes the message that there must be a better way of life than this so much easier to watch.’

2. Cyprus Avenue, Royal Court Review

We said: ‘This black comedy reminds of some of the best work of Martin McDonagh and there’s plenty of black comedy peppered throughout the piece to make the medicine of the message be stomached more easily.’

3. The End Of History, Royal Court, Tickets Review

We said: ‘The 110 minutes passes in a flash and it’s a real treat to have such a howlingly funny but also quite moving play being brought to life by such a top-notch cast.’

4. The Phlebotomist, Hampstead Theatre, Review

We said:’It’s a tremendous subject for a play, the ideas it deliberates are well explored and this remains 1 of the most satisfying plays of both this and last year.’

5. The Shy Manifesto, Greenwich Theatre Review

We said: ‘Theo Ancient has us in the palm of his hand for over an hour explaining what it is like growing up in Bournemouth as an outsider whose enthusiasm for shy radicalism is shared only by a solitary female friend.’

On our radar for the next 6 months are The Doctor (Almeida, Tickets), Appropriate (Donmar, Tickets), Hansard (National, Tickets) A Very Expensive Poison (Old Vic, Tickets), Lungs (Old Vic, Tickets), On Blair Ridge (Royal Court, Tickets), Vassa (Almeida, Tickets) and Snowflake (Kiln Theatre, Tickets).
