WORTH A LOOK?: *****
WHERE: Savoy Theatre
WHEN: 20/12 runs to 12/3/16
Casting has been announced for next year’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and its hero is Jamie Parker, who is currently starring in Guys and Dolls in the West End.
We also saw the former star of 2006 film The History Boys at the Old Vic in High Society this year. Here he plays romantic lead Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando in the 1955 film) in this story of a gambler who falls in love with a Salvation Army sergeant after accepting a bet to take her out on a date.
This Chichester Festival Theatre production is incredibly slick and boasts a superb supporting cast featuring comic couple Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide (David Haigh and Sophie Thompson reunited after Four Weddings And A Funeral). Thompson, in particular, was unexpectedly and exceptionally funny.
We gave the Old Vic’s production of High Society 5* and Parker doesn’t disappoint here either. His Masterson is cheekier and less cynical than journalist Mike Connor in High Society and who couldn’t fail to be moved as he falls in love and then doubts himself here?
The choreography is spectacular and just when you think that Luck Be A Lady Tonight is the inevitable showstopper, Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat tops it off in true tambourine-shaking fashion.
This production of Guys and Dolls is an absolute blast, Parker’s definitely one of our favourite rising stars, and Harry Potter is lucky to have him.
